How to Reset Internet Explorer and Set the Home Page

The most common issue I see in the field these days is corruption and/or hijacking of a user’s internet browser. I probably handle two or three queries a week via telephone for this issue.

The fix for this is pretty easy and involves re-setting the browser to the default settings, removing any add-ons that have ‘crow-barred’ their way onto the system. Unfortunately the process to do this varies for each browser. This one is for Internet Explorer.

Reset Internet Explorer

Click on the settings icon (note that this varies by Internet Explorer version)
reset Internet explorer

Click on Internet Options
reset Internet explorer

Click on the Advanced tab
reset Internet explorer

Click on Reset (at the bottom)

You will now be prompted to carry out the reset. Optionally you can choose to delete all personal settings. In most cases I would advise that you DO CHOOSE to delete these so tick the box

Click Reset

Internet explorer will commence the process

Once all of the lines show green it is done

You will be prompted to close the browser and to restart your system.

Choose Your Home Page

When rebooted you will find that your home page in Internet explorer has been changed to MSN. To change this back to your chosen home page open Internet Options again (as above)

Delete the MSN home page that will be showing and enter your required home page url in full (INCLUDING HTTP://)

Reset Internet explorer Home Page

Click OK

Close the browser and re-open it. You should now have your chosen home page as the default.
