Almost everyone that has tried to put together a website, flyer or marketing document will have come across the need to remove the background of a snapshot.
Most professional images are shown or supplied with a clear or white background, removing the distractions of a cluttered background.
There are multiple image editing tools on the market that provide various ways of removing backgrounds (I use Fireworks or Photoshop) but for those wanting a quick, easy to use and effective solution take a look at Bonanza’s Background Burner which can be found at https://www.bonanza.com/background_burner
Start by producing your main image with the offending background. In this example of taken a quick snapshot of two memory DIMMS that i want to sell on eBay. The background is my kitchen worktop. I’ve chosen a green background which will make it harder for the tool to define – this was intentional to show how effective it can be.
Next go to the Background Burner tool, click on Choose File and upload your image
The file will now be transferred to Bonanza for processing
When complete the Background Burner dragon will process the file
On completion it will show some samples.
Note: If you have taken am image that has a very clear background definition then the tool will produce a new image without background with virtually no more input. In this example I used the green background to make the job slightly harder. I was presented with five options and the one shown was the closest.
Select the image that is the closest match to your desired output.
In the image shown there is still a slice of green background between the two memory DIMMS.
If you need to adjust further click on Touch Up
Draw a line around the additional area you want removed (shown in red)
Background Burner will process your selection and will update the cropped image
You will need to register your details to download the result (just the first time you use it)
Once you are registered, verify your account (via email), login and select Download
You now have a choice of downloading as a JPG or PNG
Save your result. You are now done and can use your new image file in your chosen target.
In the image shown you can see how it looked originally and below it how the edited image appears on the page.
As mentioned above, if you can get as much contrast between the background and the item as possible in the original image, then this tool will work more effectively. (e.g; put your objects onto a piece of white card or material when photographing them)
